Jim Adams – Toe taps on ball

Jim Adams working out with Charles Dao at Icon Sports Alliance in Murrieta, CA on August 20, 2009.  Here I’m performing toe taps on a ball for 45 seconds. This exercise increase agility, balance, and quickness.  Most all the exercises I do is to recruit fast twitch muscle fibers.  I have little aerobic endurance because I’m training to increase my power output.

Jim Adams working out with Charles Dao doing 45 second, 10 yard sprints with a back pedal.  I was shooting for a total of nine up and back.  By the end, I felt like I was wearing concrete blocks for shoes.  My heart rate elevated to the highest it’s ever been – 195 beats per minute. This was my second exercise of the day, I was fully recovered, and it took about four minutes to fully recover from these sprints.  My quads were burning big time.

Interval training is performing high intensity movements for short periods of time.  The goal of my interval training is to raise my anaerobic threshold and increase my power output.

Jim Adams working out with Charles Dao at IconSportsAlliance.com, August 6th, 2009.  Doing bunny hops challenges the core and the ability to balance much more than just the leg muscles.  You’ve got to have rhythm and keep your core tight.  This is fairly difficult when doing at the end of a workout.

Jim Adams training with Charles on Thursday, August 6, 2009. This is a 30 inch single leg, single response box jump.

I can’t stress how important warming up is.  At my age, 41, I have to make sure I really warm up my body; especially my ankles, knees, and hip joints.  I start off with very small jumps, hops, and latter drills (below). I don’t start pushing it until I’m sweating and my heart rate has risen as high as 165 bpm.  Warming up properly takes between 1o and 15 minutes.  Depending on the duration and intensity of my workouts, warming up can last as long as 20-25 minutes. But once I’m warmed up the mad hops begin flowin’.

Jim Adams – Atomic Push Ups

Jim Adams training with Charles Dao from Icon Sports Performance in Murrieta on August 4, 2009.  Charles introduced me to atomic push ups.  This movement recruits heavily from the arms, chest, and abs.  I don’t remember feeling much in my legs but I got smoked pretty fast.  Push ups are no big deal but when you have to stabilize the rest of your body with your core, the energy drains pretty fast.  Charles said that 40 atomic push ups is the level of many professional athletes – so I guess I know what to shoot for:)

Jim Adams TV gives you the Rock Star Suite at the Hard Rock SD.  This Rock Star Suite at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego maybe the coolest room I’ve ever seen in San Diego. This room is ready for a rager. Don’t plan on getting any sleep before 2a if you’re staying in this room on Friday or Saturday night. It sits right above Sunday’s Intervention outdoor bar and pool area.  This suite sits on the corner of 5th Ave. and L st., so you can see the San Diego Convention Center on one side and 5th Ave. on the other side.  For those who don’t know, the Gaslamp District begins on 5th & L!

You will feel like a rock star in this place.

Training with Charles Dao in Murrieta on August 4, 2009.  I’ve found that interval training with a higher degree of intensity keeps me lean without becoming a 145 lb skeleton.  It also helps my heart ability to beat faster and higher, while at the same time recovering more quickly.

Practically this means I can carry my 10 year old daughter to bed, up two flights of stairs without becoming winded.  It means I can easily carry all my travel luggage throughout large airports without being winded.  I can move furniture in and out of the house, up and down the stairs, without straining and throwing my back out.  At 41, these things don’t coming as easily as they did when I was 28.

Plus, it feels great to get in the gym and just go for it. Intense interval training makes me sweat out every ounce of stress that piles up DAILY.

April Adams training with Charles Dao at Icon Sports Performance on Tuesday, August 4, 2009. A little kicking to get the blood flowing. There are so many things going on in this movement: Keeping your guard up works the arms and shoulders, rotational kicks work the abs and lower back, having to balance works all the little muscles throughout the entire body, the kicks is working the glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves, shins, and all the foot muscles – not to mention benefits of interval training.

April’s intensity is outstanding. Even at 29, she still really gets after it. April also does a fantastic foxy boxy.
